Tips to Help You Heal After Dental Implant Surgery
Getting dental implants can greatly improve your smile and oral health. But like any surgery, it will take some time to recover afterward. Follow these tips to help your mouth heal quickly and comfortably after your dental implant procedure.
Take It Easy
Don’t plan anything too strenuous for at least 24 hours after your surgery. Get plenty of rest and avoid exercise other than light walking. Don’t spit, blow your nose forcefully, drink through a straw, or do anything else that might dislodge the blood clot that forms in the empty tooth socket. Relaxing will help your body heal faster.
Use Ice Packs
Apply an ice pack to the implant site for 10 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 3 days after your surgery. The cold will constrict blood vessels, minimize swelling, and give you pain relief. Don’t apply ice directly – wrap it in a towel first to avoid irritating your skin.
Take Prescribed Medications
Your dentist will likely prescribe antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and pain medications after the procedure. Take these as directed to prevent infection and help manage swelling and discomfort. Don’t take aspirin or NSAIDs like ibuprofen, as they can increase bleeding.
Eat Soft Foods
Stick with soft, cool foods for the first few days after dental implant surgery. Things like yogurt, smoothies, ice cream, applesauce, and scrambled eggs are good options. Avoid very hot foods and beverages. Also stay away from foods that could get stuck in the surgery site like popcorn, nuts, and seeds.
Practice Proper Oral Hygiene
You should avoid brushing or flossing directly around the implant site for the first week or so. But brush and floss the rest of your mouth like usual to keep the area clean. After 24 hours, you can gently rinse with warm salt water after meals to flush out food particles. Avoid mouthwash with alcohol.
Reduce Swelling
Hold a warm, damp compress against your cheek near the implant site for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day. This will increase blood flow and help reduce facial swelling. You can also try gently massaging the area. Avoid touching the surgical site itself as it heals.
Manage Discomfort
Unfortunately, you may have some pain or discomfort for several days after surgery. Take any medication as prescribed by your dentist to help you remain comfortable. You can also apply a pain relief gel like Anbesol directly to the implant site if needed. The discomfort should gradually improve within a week.
Be sure to schedule a follow-up appointment with your dentist around 7 to 10 days after your procedure so they can monitor your healing. With proper self-care and oral hygiene, your dental implant should mend well, and you’ll be on your way to an improved smile. Let your dentist know if you have any concerns.
