Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7: What are the Differences? 

Ever since the advent of the internet, it has gone through numerous evolutions. With every improvement in the internet protocol, the new technology was given a new code. 

The latest Wi-Fi technology is called the Wi-Fi 7 technology, which comes right after Wi-Fi 6, and its variants. 

The question is, Is there much of a difference between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7? Considering that Wi-Fi 7 came out recently, how much has the technology developed till now? Let’s dive in and find out more! 

A Faster Internet Speed

The most noteworthy feature of Wi-Fi 7 is that it is 2.4x faster than Wi-Fi 6 at the same Wi-Fi radio configuration. To understand this, if you use your smartphone with a Wi-Fi 7 router, you can get speeds of up to 5Gbps, depending on which Internet Service Provider (ISP) you opt for. 

So, if you are looking the get the most out of your internet speed from your provider, then I would suggest that you go for a Wi-Fi 7 router. However, do keep in mind that this also depends on your ISP, it should offer high-speed tiers.

Improved Channel Width

Previously, Wi-Fi technology used to operate in small bands that ranged between 20MHz, 40MHZz, 80MHz, and 160MHz. However, the Wi-Fi 7 technology doubled the channel width to 320MHz, which drastically improved the internet performance. 

Not only did this help improve the internet speeds on individual devices, but it also allowed for more bandwidth on the router. This means that even if a lot of devices are connected to a Wi-Fi 7 router, it can still cater to all of them and give great internet performance. However, you should still keep your bandwidth consumption in control and make sure that you only connect limited devices to your internet. 

An Additional Wi-Fi Band

Just like previous Wi-Fi versions, Wi-Fi 6 also features only two Wi-Fi bands, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. However, the Wi-Fi 7 technology introduced a new Wi-Fi band, 6 GHz. The 6 GHz band gives you faster internet speed coupled with reduced latency and less data congestion. 

This band makes Wi-Fi 7 a perfect choice for gamers since online gamers always need less latency when they are playing their favorite game. A higher latency leads to lag in the game and that can get increasingly frustrating. However, the faster internet speed and reduced latency in the 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi 7 make it a must-have! 

Multi-Link Operation (MLO)

Multi-Link Operation is a new feature that is exclusive to Wi-Fi 7 for now since it is the first time it has been introduced. Previously, your connected devices could only use one Wi-Fi band at a time. For instance, if your phone was connected to the 2.4 GHz band, then your laptop wouldn’t connect to the 5 GHz band.

However, things changed once Wi-Fi 7 was introduced. Now, your devices such as your smartphone, laptop, and PC can send and receive data through different bands and channels, that too at the same time! This not only helps increase your internet speed on every device but also helps reduce latency.

If you have a relatively larger house, make sure you use a mesh network so that you can get rid of the dead zones in your house. This way you can make sure that every corner of your house has access to superfast internet at all times!
