3 Things You Need To Know About Traveling as a Member of the Armed Forces
Whether you’re traveling domestically or abroad as a member of the armed forces, you may need to follow different procedures from those required of civilians. Here are three things you need to know about traveling as a member of the armed forces.
1. You Should Check for Military Discounts
Many types of military discounts are available to current and former armed forces members and their family members. To find discounts that apply to you, check the appropriate armed forces travel website for your needs. If you’re a Veteran or an active member of the military, you may find resources on your branch’s website. The family members of Veterans and active duty military personnel may need to check resources such as nonprofit organizations, military hospitals, or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
2. You May Be Able To Use TSA PreCheck
All members of the military are eligible for TSA PreCheck, however, not every airport offers it, so you need to check whether one does before you use it there. You can use this benefit for any type of travel, either official or personal. Remember that children can accompany travelers with TSA PreCheck, but this benefit is only available to military members. Adult civilian family members must apply for it and pay the associated fees.
3. You May Need Two Passports
Military members and family members living with them abroad need to have both regular passports and no-fee government passports. The first type allows you to travel for emergencies, vacations, and tourism while the second type is meant specifically for official business related to the government or military.
Ensure you’re aware of any restrictions or additional requirements that apply to you if you need to travel as a military member. Review this information periodically, as circumstances may change at times.
